Convicted killer in Texas KFC massacre denies role
ABILENE, Texas—About the only point of agreement between prosecutors and a man serving life in prison for one of the most notorious mass murders in Texas is that the case is still open after more than a quarter-century.
“There’s more to this,” convicted murderer Romeo Pinkerton says. “This case ain’t over with.” A year and a half after taking a plea deal that sent him to prison for five life terms, Pinkerton insists he had no part in the deaths of five people abducted during a robbery of a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Kilgore and then shot execution-style along a remote oilfield road. “The real killer is out there still walking around,” Pinkerton told The Associated Press from the Robertson Unit of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice outside Abilene. “I’m innocent all day long in this case. I never took anybody’s life. “I think they stooped real low to get a conviction.” Tom Kelley, a spokesman for Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, whose agency has led the investigation in recent years, said the KFC case “is open and ongoing” as authorities hunt for at least one other man to join Pinkerton and a cousin, Darnell Hartsfield, in prison for the slayings.
