Texas man dies after police use Taser on him
LA MARQUE, Texas—A man who police believed was intoxicated died after officers used a Taser to subdue him near Galveston, but a resident who stopped to help said the man thought he was having a heart attack.
La Marque Police Chief Richard Price says officers found the man rolling around in a ditch about 10:30 p.m. Sunday. Price says the man fought with three officers when they tried to take him into custody. Keith Pope said he called 911 after Jamaal Ray Valentine, 27, of Texas City, told him he thought he was having a heart attack, The Galveston County Daily News reported. Pope said when he pulled over, Valentine had been trying to get help from passing motorists. “I was as close as you could get to him,” Pope said. “I was face-to-face with him, and he was not threatening to me. He was in distress, needing help.” When the officers used the shock gun on Valentine, he collapsed and was taken to Mainland Medical Center in nearby Texas City, where he died. Price says the officers were bruised in the fight but were not injured severely. They’ve been assigned to administrative duties until the investigation is complete. The Galveston County district attorney’s office is investigating the death. Featured Texarkana Business Directory Articles Featured Texarkana Business Directory Coupons
