Lightning hits unfinished house, 8 hurt
SABINE PASS, Texas—Eight people were injured, including 1 critically, when lightning struck a house being built in Sabine Pass.
The incident happened about 3:20 p.m. Thursday when a storm moved into the historic Southeast Texas coastal community on the fringe of Port Arthur, 90 miles east of Houston. Port Arthur Police Chief Mark Blanton says the eight were working on the uncompleted roof when the lightning struck. One worker was taken to a Houston hospital, while seven others were taken to Port Arthur hospitals. Blanton says one of those was critically injured. No names have been released. Authorities say the modular house being assembled was to replace one destroyed by Hurricane Rita in 2005, then again by Hurricane Ike last year.
