Yankees finish sweep of Seattle

NEW YORK—Derek Jeter had four hits and the New York Yankees got consecutive homers from Melky Cabrera and Robinson Cano during a six-run outburst, beating the slumping Seattle Mariners 8-2 Sunday to finish a lopsided three-game sweep.

Red Sox 7, Rays 3

BOSTON—Kevin Youkilis had four RBIs and Jon Lester pitched six innings to lift Boston over Tampa Bay, spoiling the return of Rays ace Scott Kazmir.

After being swept for the first time in franchise history by Tampa Bay last weekend, the Red Sox returned the favor and outscored the Rays in the series 26-10. None of the Tampa Bay starters in the three-game series made it out of the fourth inning.

Twins 7, Tigers 6

MINNEAPOLIS—Joe Mauer capped a Minnesota rally from a six-run, first-inning deficit, slapping a two-run single up the middle in the seventh to lift the Twins past the Tigers.

A two-out error in the inning by third baseman Carlos Guillen, who let a routine groundball hit by Nick Punto roll off his glove and through his legs, set up a four-run surge and ruined a strong start by Kenny Rogers.

Angels 6, Orioles 5

ANAHEIM, Calif.—Gary Matthews Jr. and Torii Hunter homered in the first inning and Los Angeles beat Baltimore despite a poor outing by still-unbeaten Joe Saunders.

Saunders (6-0) threw 85 pitches over five innings in the shortest of his seven starts. The left-hander allowed four runs and a career-high 12 hits, struck out one and walked none.

Blue Jays 4, White Sox 3

TORONTO—Roy Halladay won for the first time in four starts, Matt Stairs scored twice and drove in two runs and Toronto handed Chicago its season-high fifth straight loss.

Halladay (3-4) had thrown complete games in his previous four starts, but lost the last three. He lasted 7 1-3 innings in this one, giving up three runs—one earned—and three hits. Halladay walked none and struck out seven.

Royals 2, Indians 0

CLEVELAND—Gil Meche pitched seven shutout innings, a throwing error by third baseman Casey Blake broke a scoreless tie and Kansas City beat Cleveland.

Miguel Olivo added a solo homer in the ninth for the Royals, who outscored the Indians 6-2 in sweeping the two-game series. Friday night’s game was rained out.

Athletics 3, Rangers 1

OAKLAND, Calif.—Jack Cust’s two-run homer in the seventh inning helped Oakland end the Rangers’ four-game winning streak.

Santiago Casilla (1-0) threw a scoreless seventh for the win, and has yet to allow a run in his 16 1-3 innings.

Rangers’ starter Scott Feldman (0-1) took a three-hit shutout into the seventh inning before allowing a sun-aided double to Frank Thomas and Cust’s third homer in four games.

A’s starter Greg Smith gave up German Duran’s first major-league home run leading off the third and then retired 12 of the final 14 hitters he faced.
