Chacon escapes embarrassing record
HOUSTON—Decisions, decisions—or rather, finally just one.
Shawn Chacon pitched seven solid innings for his first win this season, breaking his major league record streak of nine straight no-decisions to start a season in Houston’s 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Carlos Lee’s three-run homer in the third inning helped Chacon (1-0) overcome a rough start and avoid tying the overall record for consecutive starts without a decision—or worse, let his first decision be a loss. It gives the Astros a 2-1 series win over their NL-Central rival and is Houston’s ninth win in the last 13 games. Derrek Lee hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give Chicago an early lead. Micah Hoffpauir doubled for his first major league hit before scoring on a double by Geovany Soto that made it 3-0. Ryan Theriot singled with two outs in the second inning, but was picked off at first after drifting too far from the base. Chacon, in his first season in Houston after spending 2007 in Pittsburgh, then settled down and retired the next 12 batters, with four strikeouts. Giants 3, Rockies 2, 10 innings DENVER—Omar Vizquel doubled to start a game-tying rally in the ninth inning, then drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the 10th, leading San Francisco to a victory over Colorado. Brian Wilson struck out Omar Quintanilla looking for the final out in the 10th to pick up his 14th save in 16 chances. Tyler Walker (2-2) got the win after setting down the Rockies in the ninth. Ray Durham led off the 10th with a single and Rich Aurilia drew a walk off Matt Herges (2-1). After a fielder’s choice, Vizquel lifted a fly ball to left. The Giants scored twice in the ninth off closer Brian Fuentes to tie it on Bengie Molina’s RBI single and pinch-hitter Steve Holm’s run-scoring double. Braves 11, Mets 4 ATLANTA—Jeff Francoeur, back in the lineup after a rare night off, homered and drove in four runs to help Atlanta beat the New York for its third straight win in the series. Francoeur did not play in the second game of Tuesday’s doubleheader, ending his streak of 370 consecutive games played. It was his first game off since Oct. 1, 2005. Braves rookie Jair Jurrjens (5-3) gave up only one earned run in seven innings for his second win over the Mets this season. Jurrjens gave up five hits and two runs with two walks and a strikeout. Mets starter Mike Pelfrey (2-5) gave up six runs on eight hits in four innings. The rest must have helped Francoeur. He hit his first homer since April 12, a two-run shot in the sixth off reliever Pedro Feliciano. Mark Teixeira had three hits, including a three-run double, and Chipper Jones hit his 12th homer. Phillies 12, Nationals 2 WASHINGTON—Pedro Feliz’s home run landed in the left field bullpen. Shane Victorino put one just inside the left foul pole. Ryan Howard didn’t play around at all, launching shots into both decks in right-center. After scoring only one run in their previous two games, Philadelphia’s high-octane offense returned with a dose of extra flourish, and an eight-run sixth inning was only part of the fun in a rout of Washington. Howard went 3-for-5 and drove in four runs with a double and his 11th and 12th homers. Victorino and Feliz had three hits each as the Phillies piled up 15 hits and a season-high in runs. Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 1 MIAMI—The surprising Florida Marlins used a brazen bunt to help end Brandon Webb’s winning streak. Florida scored its first run on a suicide squeeze, and Ricky Nolasco allowed only three hits over seven innings to beat Webb. Webb (9-1) was bidding to become only the third pitcher since World War I to win his first 10 starts. Instead, he left for a pinch hitter after allowing six hits and three runs in seven innings. Matt Treanor bunted in a run for a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning, and Cody Ross followed with a homer. Stephen Drew hit his sixth homer for the Diamondbacks, but that’s all the offense they could muster against Nolasco (3-3). Brewers 4, Pirates 1 PITTSBURGH—Ben Sheets limited Pittsburgh to one run despite allowing 11 hits in his second complete game of the season, and Rickie Weeks homered and scored twice to lead Milwaukee to victory. The Brewers, who began the three-game series Tuesday with a 20-42 record at PNC Park, can sweep a series there for the first time since the ballpark opened in 2001 by winning Thursday. Milwaukee had lost nine in a row on the road before the series began, only to win there for the second night in a row. |
