NCAA Baseball Tournament: Aggies advance to super regionals
COLLEGE STATION, Texas—Kyle Colligan slugged two home runs to lead Texas A&M to a 13-5 victory over Houston in an NCAA tournament regional title game Monday night.
The Aggies (46-17) advance to play at Rice (45-13) in a super regional this weekend. Colligan, named the regional’s most outstanding player, started the scoring early with a deep blast to center field in lifting the Aggies to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. A&M trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the second when the Aggies broke loose for seven runs on the strength of a solo home run by Darby Brown, a two-run homer by Colligan and a 3-RBI double by Brown later in the inning. Houston’s season ends at 42-24. The super regional is a rematch of last year, when the Owls won in two games 3-2 and 5-2. On Monday, Brown led the Aggies with four RBIs, while Colligan added three. Four of Colligan’s 14 homers on the season have come over four games in the regional. A&M’s Brian Ruggiano added to Houston’s misery in the sixth with a two-run homer to left-center, A&M’s fourth long ball of the game. The Aggies had a dozen homers in the regional. Kyle Thebeau (6-4) earned the victory by allowing six hits but only two earned runs over four innings. Cougars starter Ty Stuckey (3-4) took the loss after allowing three hits and four earned runs over an inning’s work. Stanford 9, Pepperdine 7 STANFORD, Calif.—Sean Ratliff hit a pair of home runs, including a go-ahead grand slam, and Stanford overcame an early four-run deficit to beat Pepperdine and win the Stanford regional. Jason Castro hit a key two-run double for the Cardinal (37-22), who won four consecutive elimination games to advance to a Super Regional against the winner of the Fullerton regional. Chase d’Arnaud had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in four runs for the Waves (38-21), who lost their third straight regional championship. Drew Storen (4-3) pitched four innings in relief to earn his second win of the regional. Storen gave up two runs on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Tyler Hess (4-1), who walked a batter ahead of Ratliff’s grand slam, took the loss. Georgia 18, Georgia Tech 6 ATLANTA—Matt Olson went 5-for-6 with three RBIs and Rich Poythress hit a two-run homer to help Georgia advance to an NCAA Super Regional with a victory over Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs (39-22-1) will host North Carolina State, a 2-1 winner Sunday over South Carolina, in an NCAA Super Regional matchup this weekend. Alex McRee (6-1) entered the game in the first after Bulldogs starter Justin Grimm failed to retire a batter. Pitching the next four full innings, McRee allowed four hits, two runs—one earned—with one walk and five strikeouts. Brandon Cumpton (2-1), the Jackets’ second pitcher, allowed five hits, two walks and five runs—three earned—with no strikeouts. Georgia Tech (41-21) ended a difficult year that included the heroine-related death of pitcher Michael Hutts on April 11. |
