American League: Rangers knock off Yankees again
![]() Associated Press Texas’ David Murphy scores in front of New York catcher Jorge Posada Tuesday at Yankee Stadium. The Rangers defeated the Yankees, 3-2. Rivera came on in the ninth after the New York bullpen held Texas to one hit in four innings in relief of Joba Chamberlain and proceeded to give up hits to the first two batters he faced. Ian Kinsler doubled to left, stole third—his third steal of the game—and scored to give Texas a 3-2 lead on Young’s hit through a drawn-in infield to give the Yankees their third straight loss. Frank Francisco (2-2) pitched the eighth for the win. C.J. Wilson walked the leadoff batter in the ninth, but got three outs for his 19th save in 21 chances. Derek Jeter, who got the night off, was in the on-deck circle when Wilson got the final out. Rivera (2-3) has not allowed a run in a save situation this season. All four runs he’s allowed have come in games that were tied. Sidney Ponson, in his second stint with New York, will face his former team in the series finale Wednesday. Ponson was waived by Texas on June 16 for what Rangers manager Ron Washington said pre-game Tuesday was “His philosophy didn’t gel with ours.” Chamberlain mightily struggled with his control in his fifth start. After throwing 114 pitches in 6 2-3 innings to earn his first win as a starter on Wednesday in Pittsburgh, he needed 91 pitches just to get through four innings Tuesday. Walks to the first two batters in the second led to two runs for Texas, but it could have been much worse. The Rangers had two base runners thrown out trying to advance to third on consecutive RBI hits by Chris Davis and Jarrod Saltalamacchia that gave Texas a 2-0 lead. Chamberlain had his most electrifying moment of the outing when he struck out Kinsler with a 99 mph fastball to end the inning with a runner on first. Chamberlain allowed two runs and five hits in four innings. He walked four and struck out six. Rangers starter Kevin Millwood was removed after allowing a run on five hits and throwing 84 pitches in five innings. He struck out six and walked one. Rays 3, Red Sox 1 ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Matt Garza pitched seven strong innings in his first outing since throwing a one-hitter, and the Tampa Bay Rays beat Boston and nemesis Tim Wakefield. The win extended their lead in the AL East to 2 1/2 games over the second-place Red Sox. Garza (7-4) allowed an unearned run and five hits, and Dioner Navarro snapped a fourth-inning tie with an RBI single off Wakefield (5-6), whose 19 career victories against Tampa Bay—nine at Tropicana Field—are the most by an opposing pitcher. The Rays have won seven of eight, improving the best record in the major leagues to 51-32. They are 5-0 at home against the Red Sox, who have won all six games the teams have played at Fenway Park this season. Orioles 7, Royals 5 BALTIMORE—Brian Roberts homered, Ramon Hernandez and Adam Jones had two RBIs apiece, and Baltimore rebounded from two straight frustrating losses by beating Kansas City. Aubrey Huff had two hits and drove in a run for the Orioles. Gordon and Mark Teahan homered for the Royals, whose six-game road winning streak ended. Baltimore starter Radhames Liz (3-0) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings. George Sherill got two outs for his 27th save. White Sox 3, Indians 2, 10 innings CHICAGO—Alexei Ramirez tied it with a two-out homer and Orlando Cabrera won it with an RBI single, both in the 10th inning, and Chicago rallied for its sixth straight win, beating Cleveland. With the White Sox trailing 2-1 and two outs, Ramirez hit a towering fly off Indians closer Joe Borowski. Cleveland left fielder Ben Francisco went back to the fence like he might have a play, but the ball just sailed over to tie the game. Pinch-hitter DeWayne Wise singled, stole second and scored on Cabrera’s single to center off Borowski (1-3), who blew his fourth save in 10 chances. Adam Russell (1-0) got the win with one-third of an inning. Twins 6, Tigers 4 MINNEAPOLIS—Craig Monroe hit a three-run homer and Justin Morneau added three hits to help Minnesota beat Detroit. Mike Redmond had two RBIs for Minnesota, which has won eight of 10 and 12 of its last 14. Marcus Thames hit his second homer in as many games for the Tigers, who lost for the first time in seven games. Scott Baker (5-2) wasn’t sharp, but won his third straight game for the first time in his 60-start career. For the second straight start, he allowed three earned runs in six innings. Nate Robertson (6-7) was hit hard for the second straight game. Robertson, who allowed a season-high 11 hits in 6 1-3 innings last Thursday, allowed the same amount in four innings Tuesday. |
