Baseball: Rangers promote Harrison
ARLINGTON, Texas—The Texas Rangers promoted Matt Harrison from Triple-A Oklahoma on Tuesday and scheduled him to make his major league debut the same night against the Los Angeles Angels.
The Rangers are likely to do it again today with Michael Ballard, which would make Texas the first team since Milwaukee in 2002 to have consecutive starting pitchers making their first big league appearance. Harrison, who came to Texas in the Mark Teixeira trade with Atlanta last year, had his contract purchased from Oklahoma. In 15 starts split between the Rangers’ top farm club and Double-A Frisco, he was 6-3 with a 3.43 ERA. To make room for Harrison, the Rangers put right-hander Eric Hurley on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 30. Hurley, who has a strained left hamstring, made his major league debut at Kansas City on June 12. Ballard has spent all season in Frisco, where he is 8-3 with a 3.97 ERA in 15 starts. The Rangers’ rotation is in shambles because of mounting injuries. It’s unclear when Vicente Padilla (10-5) will start again because of a neck strain and a bruised thumb. Before the team put him on the DL, Hurley said his hamstring felt better and he hoped to start as early as Wednesday. Kevin Millwood and Luis Mendoza are the only starters coming out of spring training in the rotation now, but Mendoza allowed eight runs and didn’t get out of the second inning in Monday night’s 9-6 loss to the Angels. “We don’t have a rotation right now. We have a smorgasbord of pitchers,” said Millwood, who has a sore right groin and spent nearly three weeks on the disabled list in May. “We’re throwing somebody out there when we can. This has been kind of amazing.” Assuming Ballard starts Wednesday, the Rangers will lead the majors with 12 different starting pitchers this season. The Yankees have used 11 different starters. Harrison was to be the 45th player used by the Rangers this season, tied with San Diego for the most in baseball. “We’ve got to try to adjust the best we can,” manager Ron Washington said. “That’s what’s so beautiful about baseball. You adjust and readjust and adjust and readjust and as soon as you stop adjusting and readjusting, you might as well go home.” Ben Diggins and Dave Pember made their debuts for the Brewers on Sept. 2-3, 2002, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Neither has returned to the majors since that season. Diggins ended up 0-4 with an 8.63 ERA in five starts. Pember didn’t start again and finished 0-1 with 5.19 ERA in four appearances. |
