National League: Sabathia claims win for Brewers
![]() Associated Press St. Louis’ Cesar Izturis throws over Philadelphia’s Chase Utley to complete a double play Tuesday in Philadelphia. The Cardinals defeated the Phillies, 2-0. Sabathia (1-0), the reigning AL Cy Young winner, walked five, tying the season high he set back in April. The Brewers led 4-1 after five innings and Sabathia got in trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. Yorvit Torrealba doubled down the right-field line to drive in two runs, but Sabathia got out of the inning without giving up the lead. He was replaced by reliever David Riske in the sixth, and the Brewers’ bullpen held on for the victory as Milwaukee added three runs in the seventh. Ryan Braun hit his 22nd homer in the first, a three-run drive off Rockies starter Mark Redman (2-4). Cardinals 2, Phillies 0 PHILADELPHIA—Joel Pineiro and three relievers combined on a six-hitter, and Rick Ankiel and Ryan Ludwick hit solo homers for St. Louis. Pineiro (3-4) allowed five hits and walked three in 6 1-3 innings for his first win since April 29. He was 0-2 with seven no-decisions in his previous nine starts. Ron Villone got two outs in the seventh, Kyle McClellan pitched a perfect eighth and Ryan Franklin finished for his 12th save. Cole Hamels (9-6) gave up three hits—including the home runs—in seven innings and struck out eight. The Phillies have lost nine of 11 at home. Ankiel hit his 19th homer in the fifth and Ludwick hit his 18th in the sixth. Mets 7, Giants 0 NEW YORK—Mike Pelfrey won his fifth straight start and Carlos Beltran drove in four runs for surging New York. Beltran hit a three-run homer in the first and Carlos Delgado also connected off Tim Lincecum (10-2) to help the Mets win their fourth straight. New York is 1 1/2 games behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East. Two of the three hits Pelfrey (7-6) allowed over seven innings were infield singles. He struck out five and walked none as the Mets (46-44) went two games above .500 for the first time since May 20. Fernando Tatis added a solo homer in the eighth off Kevin Correia. Scott Schoeneweis and Joe Smith each worked a perfect inning to complete New York’s third shutout this season. Blanked for the sixth time, the Giants were outhit 14-3. Diamondbacks 2, Nationals 0 WASHINGTON—Brandon Webb earned his major league-leading 13th win, pitching six scoreless innings for Arizona. Webb (13-4) struck out six and allowed six hits and two walks. It was the 16th time in his 19 starts Webb lasted at least six innings. Chad Qualls pitched the seventh for the Diamondbacks, Tony Pena the eighth and Brandon Lyon the ninth for his 19th save. Washington lost its sixth straight game. Nationals starter Odalis Perez (2-6) was ejected in the third inning for arguing the second balk call in an inning against him. In 2 2-3 innings Perez gave up an unearned run, walked four and was called for the two balks. Perez has won only two of his 16 starts this season. Cubs 7, Reds 3 CHICAGO—Ryan Dempster became the first Cubs pitcher in 31 years to start a season 10-0 at home and Mike Fontenot and Geovany Soto homered for Chicago. Dempster (10-3) is the first Cubs’ pitcher to win his first 10 decisions at home since Rick Reuschel in 1977. He allowed two hits and a run in seven innings. Cincinnati starter Aaron Harang walked a career-high seven and gave up six runs and five hits in 4 1-3 innings. Fontenot gave Chicago a 4-1 lead in the fourth with his sixth homer. Soto had a two-run shot, his 16th, to chase Harang (3-11) in the fifth and make it 6-1. |
