American League: Rangers beat White Sox, 7-2
ARLINGTON, Texas—Josh Hamilton drove in two more runs, Luis Mendoza rebounded from a rough outing to strike out eight over six innings and the Texas Rangers beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2 Friday night.
Hamilton, who will start for the American League in Tuesday’s All-Star game, went 3-for-5 and leads the majors with 93 RBIs. He has driven in 11 over his last seven games. Pitching on three days’ rest, Mendoza (2-3) allowed just three hits and one walk to win for the first time in six starts. He allowed eight runs in 1 1-3 innings in Texas’ 9-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday. Gavin Floyd (10-5) lasted just 2 2-3 innings in his shortest outing of the season for the White Sox. Floyd, who was 6-1 in his previous eight starts, walked a career-high seven and allowed six runs. Blue Jays 5, Yankees 0 TORONTO—Roy Halladay threw a two-hitter and Matt Stairs and Rod Barajas homered to lead Toronto Blue to a victory over New York. Halladay (11-6) won his third straight start and threw his major league-leading seventh complete game. He struck out eight and walked one. The right-hander, who has 11 career shutouts, is 8-1 over his past 12 starts. Indians 5, Rays 0 CLEVELAND—Cliff Lee pitched six stellar innings in a warmup for a possible All-Star game start, and Cleveland defeated Tampa Bay to extend the Rays’ season-high losing streak to five games. Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run homer and RBI double off James Shields (7-6) as the Indians beat the Rays in Cleveland for the 11th consecutive time since Sept. 29, 2005. The Indians entered the four-game series on a 10-game losing streak — their longest in 29 years— but have claimed consecutive wins for the first time since June 26-27. Twins 3, Tigers 2 DETROIT—Nick Punto drove in two runs and Minnesota’s bullpen shut down Detroit to help the Twins beat Detroit. Punto had RBIs in the fourth and sixth innings before Delmon Young added what turned out to be the game-winner with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Royals 3, Mariners 1 KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Luke Hochevar scattered five hits over seven innings and David DeJesus doubled in two runs, helping Kansas City defeat Seattle. Hochevar limited the Mariners to four singles the first six innings, but Adrian Beltre opened the seventh with a double. Beltre went to third on Jeremy Reed’s ground out and scored on Miguel Cario’s ground out to shortstop Mike Aviles for the only Seattle run. Twins 7, Red Sox 3 BOSTON—Brian Roberts was a home run short of the cycle as Baltimore knocked around no-hit kid Clay Buchholz and beat Boston. The rare home loss snapped Boston’s five-game losing streak. |
