HOUSTON—Two divers who were passed over last week for the U.S. Olympic team have asked an arbitrator to overturn the decision, according to a newspaper report.

Laura Wilkinson, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist, and her teammate Jessica Livingston filed a complaint on the decision by the USA Diving selection committee to exclude them from women’s synchro platform diving in Beijing.

A hearing on the complaint, filed Tuesday night with the American Arbitration Association, will be held Friday morning in Los Angeles, the Houston Chronicle reported in its online edition on Thursday.

Wilkinson and Livington, from the Houston suburb of The Woodlands, are asking in their 10-page complaint to be placed on the team or that USA Diving hold another competition to see if they or the team of Haley Ishimatsu and Mary Beth Dunnichay should compete in Beijing.

Last week, Ishimatsu and Dunnichay were named to the team after they split four competitions with Wilkinson and Livingston at a selection camp in Knoxville, Tenn.

In the complaint, attorneys for Wilkinson and Livingston said USA Diving’s selection criteria are too broadly drawn to meet the standard required by the U.S. Olympic Committee for team selection proceedings.

Wilkinson and Livingston had a higher average score for the four competitions, 329.88 to 327.32.

But Ishimatsu and Dunnichay were chosen because they had the best individual score (346.98) of the four rounds of dives and because it had a higher score under a formula known as “projected competition score,” according to the complaint.

Wilkinson and Livingston say the committee violated its own procedures and that the use of the projected competition score is less effective than the average score in making a selection.
