American League: White Sox thump Rangers, 10-2

Associated Press Oakland third baseman Jack Hannahan throws out a runner Tuesday in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Athletics snapped a six-game losing skid with an 8-1 win over Tampa Bay.
CHICAGO—Mark Buehrle pitched 7 1-3 innings and Alexei Ramirez hit the first grand slam of his career to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 10-2 Tuesday night.

Nick Swisher hit a three-run homer, Jermaine Dye had three hits and Jim Thome reached base four times as the White Sox snapped a three-game losing streak.

Pitching on three days rest so he could attend his grandfather’s funeral in Missouri, Buehrle (8-8) gave up a leadoff triple to Hank Blalock in the second inning and then retired 15 of the next 16 batters.

Buehrle’s last start against the Rangers was his no-hitter on April 18, 2007. His only blemish on Tuesday night came in the eighth when he gave up a solo shot to Chris Davis.

Buehrle left to a loud standing ovation after allowing one run on six hits and no walks.

Luis Mendoza (2-4) gave up an RBI double to Dye in the first inning and got roughed up in the fourth, allowing Swisher’s three-run homer and A.J. Pierzynski’s RBI single to put Chicago up 5-0.

Athletics 8, Rays 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Dallas Braden allowed one run over five innings and Jack Hannahan hit a three-run homer as Oakland ended a six-game losing streak with a victory over Tampa.

Braden (2-0) allowed four hits, walked four and struck out one. Braden was making his first start of the season, replacing of Joe Blanton, who was traded to Philadelphia last Thursday, in the rotation.

Hannahan put the Athletics ahead 3-1 in the fourth with his homer off Andy Sonnanstine (10-5).

Kurt Suzuki had an RBI double and Hannahan added a run-scoring single during a four-run eighth that made it 7-1.

Sonnanstine gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings.

Yankees 8, Twins 2

NEW YORK—Bobby Abreu hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth and drove in three runs, leading surging New York past Minnesota for its ninth consecutive victory at home.

Derek Jeter added a two-run double and Robinson Cano continued his second-half tear with two RBI singles, his fifth straight multihit game since the All-Star break.

New York’s effective bullpen came through again after Darrell Rasner was pulled in the sixth.

The Yankees (55-45) won their fifth straight overall to go 10 games over .500 for the first time this season. They also moved within 3 1/2 games of first-place Tampa Bay in the AL East.

The home winning streak is New York’s longest since a nine-game run in May 2005.

Minnesota dropped to 3-18 at Yankee Stadium since the start of the 2002 season. The Twins have lost seven straight series in the Bronx.

Blue Jays 10, Orioles 8

BALTIMORE—Adam Lind had a career-high four hits, including a three-run homer, and light-hitting John McDonald had four RBIs to rally Toronto past Baltimore.

Alex Rios also homered for the Blue Jays, who trailed 4-0 after three innings and 7-6 after five.

Toronto’s comeback took some of the sting away from a poor performance by starter Shaun Marcum, making his first start in over a month after being sidelined with elbow soreness. Marcum gave up seven runs and eight hits, including three home runs, in 4 2-3 innings.

Jesse Carlson (2-1) pitched 1 1-3 innings of one-hit relief and B.J. Ryan worked the ninth for his 19th save.
