The theory behind opening the season with an easy nonconference opponent is relatively simple: get a win, gain some confidence, hopefully build toward a good season.

There’s just one flaw to that approach: losing.

Hoping for a lopsided victory over a team that was winless in 15 games against the Big 12, the Aggies fell flat, opening the season with an 18-14 loss to Arkansas State in coach Mike Sherman’s College Station debut.
