Texarkana Youth Symphony set for its second show
Some new kids on the musical block are getting set for their second performance in Texarkana.
It’s the Texarkana Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Steven Bird, strings teacher at College Hill Middle School. They’ll perform at 11 a.m. Saturday at Cabe Hall in the Regional Arts Center downtown. It’s a performance held in conjunction with the opening of the Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council’s 16th Annual Juried Student Exhibition that’s free and opens tomorrow and runs until June 14. “We have several pieces planned. We’re performing one movement of a Brahms symphony, the 3rd Movement of the 4th Symphony,” said Bird. “Also, the hornpipe from “Water Music” by Handel. We’ll be performing some music from the most recent Star Wars movie and other selections.” The roster of youthful talents who’ve signed on the for the TYSO now numbers 25 musicians from the area. “We’re holding open auditions for new members on May 24. Interested students should contact the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra office,” Bird said. That phone number is 870-773-3401. Specifically, the TYSO is looking for flutes, oboes, bassoons, horns, trumpets, trombones, percussion and all strings.
