Chorus offers voice lessons for women

Texarkana’s Twin City Sensations, a four-part, a cappella harmony chorus for women, would love some new members and will start free voice lessons at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 2623 N. Robison Road.

“We tell people it’s a free voice lesson program we do every year ... to introduce them to a cappella,” said Robin Curtis, TCS director.

The voice lessons will run four weeks on Tuesday nights and teach women about the basics of singing. That includes breathing, posture, vocal skills and resonating.

“What we do is we educate women on the barbershop style of singing. However, we only sing barbershop-style songs for our competitions. Our other repertoire is very much non-barbershop. It’s still four-part harmony. It’s still a cappella ...” Curtis, a voice and piano teacher here in Texarkana, said. “The remainder of our repertoire is a show repertoire.”

TCS members will guide singers to their best singing range during the first lesson on Tuesday—whether that’s lead, bass, baritone or tenor.

“We just have so much fun with learning to improve our vocal skills on a regular basis ... you never stop learning,” said Curtis.

All ages take part in the Twin City Sensations—from teens to retirees. And TCS membership is open to women from across the Ark-La-Tex region.

“The only requirements are you love to sing and want to learn more about how to improve your voice,” said Curtis.

A recent competition in Texas saw the TCS go up against (and beat) 13 other division choruses. They landed first place in the Division A, Region 25 competition.

Sound, music, expression and showmanship are the elements judged in competitions. To that end, TCS incorporates choreography into their competition routine.

Twin City Sensations, which celebrated its 20th year last fall, also hires vocal coaches to come in three or four times per year and conduct Saturday workshops.

“We’ve sung for churches, private-sector banquets and parties (and) we have quartets that do singing Valentines every year,” said Curtis. “We’ve even done birthday parties.”
