Troops on stage Sunday for 25th anniversary of Soldier Show

The Army brings its road show to Texarkana at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Four States Fair Arena. The performance is free and open to the public; no tickets are necessary. Along with the sounds of daily Army life playing, a desert sunset backdrop, and a stage of camouflage and sandbags, the show’s performers will bring an energetic, 90-minute song and dance revue. “The impression we want the audience to get is that they’ve been transported to the Middle East to a combat area,” said director Tim Higdon in a statement. The on-stage talent is drawn from regular soldiers who will show their musical, singing and dancing talents. Musically, Sunday’s show will run the gamut from AC/DC to Michael Jackson and incorporates the latest audio and video technology. Cindy Reed, show coordinator at the Red River Army Depot, said the civilian workforce at the depot enjoys the show because their work supports the soldiers. “It is a show performed by the soldiers for the soldiers in the field as well as the civilian soldiers in the field,” said Reed. The Army Soldier Show cast and crew totals 30, she said. The performance will also pay homage to the Army Soldier show’s history, including a rendition of Irving Berlin’s “This is the Army, Mr. Jones.” It was Berlin who directed the very first Army Soldier Show back in 1918 on Broadway. The Army Soldier Show reappeared during World War II and then the modern version began in 1983. While they’re part of the Army Soldier Show, soldiers are part of the U.S. Army Entertainment Division. |
