TexRep changes gears, prepares coffeehouse musical show
Like a movie with strange turns of plot, Texarkana Repertory Co.’s plans to stage “Who’s On First?” next week have taken a different twist.
TexRep has canceled its six-night run of the play. In lieu of that production, it will stage a free Tuesday evening show of Broadway music and song performed by talented Texarkanians. Local singers coordinated by Stacy James Mayo will take to the stage at 7 p.m. at The Percolator, a new downtown coffeeshop at 218 W. Broad St. (formerly Cinema 218). Josh Morriss III was directing four actors for the “Who’s On First?” production but decided Tuesday night to pull the plug on the show. “Just a few days before our scheduled opening night, the inescapable conclusion became apparent that this show was not in a position to present our audience members the quality they have come to expect of TexRep or of the Community Division,” said Morriss in an announcement sent to TexRep supporters. TexRep will give full refunds to all ticket buyers. However, TexRep does invite the public to enjoy a night of local musical talent on Tuesday. Coffee and soft drinks will be sold by The Percolator staff. The idea to hold a festive night of Broadway music arose from original plans to have singing waiters perform for theatergoers before the play production. TexRep’s community division has performed a summertime show each of the previous two years: “Musical of Musicals The Musical” in 2006 and “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” last year. “The community division is for the purpose of trying to reach out to the community, do something a little offbeat, a little different from the norm—not to take away from the main stage division, the stuff that goes on out at the college,” said Morriss, community division vice president. “Who’s On First?” is a farcical play written by Jack Sharkey. The two acts of the play feature eight scenes with a different plot and outcome but the same general characters. TexRep’s next stage production is Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun,” which will be staged Sept. 12-14 and Sept. 19-21. Auditions for that play are scheduled for Monday, July 28, at 7 p.m. in the Stilwell Theatre on the Texarkana College campus. |
