Local musicians to host benefit for Ligon family
Six bands at Fat Jack’s for $10 sounds like a great deal. And helping a young family in their time of need makes it an even richer experience.
On Sunday, the life and spirit of Scotty Ray Ligon, a popular local musician who died in mid-July of injuries received in a motorcycle accident, will be celebrated by local musicians in a benefit. Playing from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. are Jimmy Joe Akin and John Marshall, Mystery Machine, Michael DeArmond, Too Far Gone, Ms. Mac & the Groovetones and Kevin and Curt. The show is acoustic. Ligon, who was 36, had been a member of several notable local bands, including Nonetheless, 9 Volt Trigger and Modern Fossil. He is remembered as a great musician and a man who gave generously of himself to his family, friends and the community. “He was very active from the ’90s on forward,” said musician Glenn “SmittyG” Smith, who organized the fund-raiser. He, like Ligon, is a member of Texarkanarocks.com, a Website that’s brought local musicians together for several years. “He was extremely giving,” said Smith, noting that when he’d organized fund-raisers in the past, Ligon was always the first to volunteer. Through the work of Smith and other musicians and friends, proceeds for Sunday’s concert will help the Ligon family pay for medical expenses arising from Scotty’s care. Ligon is survived by his wife, Samantha, and two children. “They were hit with a devastating loss,” said Smith. A silent auction of items donated by businesses will also be held to help the family. Fat Jack’s is at 3324 N. State Line Ave. |
