‘I.O.U.S.A.’ sounds alarm on nation’s economic woes

A one-time, thought provoking event brings current economic affairs discussion to the big screen Thursday night at Cinemark Texarkana 14.

It also continues the marriage of movie theaters with alternative programming.

“I.O.U.S.A.: Live With Warren Buffet, Pete Peterson & Dave Walker” airs Thursday as a film screening and 45-minute live broadcast discussion about the country’s economic woes and possible ways to fix them.

Buffet, chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway, leads the crew of economic and financial leaders who will participate in the panel talk. Walker is the former U.S. comptroller general and has been one of the most vocal people to sound the alarm.

Texarkana’s movie theater is one of a handful to broadcast the event on the big screen.

The discussion comes on the heels of the documentary film “I.O.U.S.A.,” which has a tag line that reads: “One Nation. Under Stress. In Debt.” That film will be screened as part of the discussion event on Thursday.

The film, arguing the country should take action right now to address the crisis, tackles what economists say is possibly an insurmountable debt problem facing the country. Among the notable interviewees discussing the issues are Buffet, Alan Greenspan, Paul O’Neill, Robert Rubin and Paul Volcker.

“I.O.U.S.A.” premiered earlier this year at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival.

The ticket price for this live event is $12.50. It starts at 7 p.m. and is scheduled to run for two hours and 45 minutes.
