Texarkana native feels kinship with ‘Oprah’ show topic

Monroe
Being an audience member on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” was indeed a dream come true for Texarkana native Bridgette Monroe.

Monroe, a writer who now lives in Dallas after growing up in Texarkana, sat in on a show about amazing pets, she said. One subject touched upon in the show was critters who’d faced tough times in life but survived.

“The catch was the show was about amazing pets who had second chances in life, too,” said Monroe.

Second chances is a subject with which she’s certainly familiar, having battled breast cancer and other illnesses.

“I’m a miracle basically,” Monroe said.

And before the late-August taping of the show, she’d written to the “Oprah” show about many of her life-changing events. The episode is scheduled to appear later this month.

Last year, Monroe’s play, “Me and My Grandchildren,” was performed at Faith Love & Hope Youth Corp. here in Texarkana.

Monroe earned first-place kudos in 2007 for that play in a TeCo Theatrical Productions’ multicultural theater company competition, which gave honors to her play “She’niece’s Crisis” the previous year.

As for Monroe, she feels blessed to be involved in writing and her company Jabez Entertainment, of which she’s the director and founder.

She called the experience of being able to see a live taping of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” a once-in-a-lifetime experience. About Winfrey, she said, “She’s just angelic. Her compassion, her spirit, flows from the front door to the exit.”

“I want to let my hometown people know that dreams can come true,” said Monroe.
