Truly timeless

Local orchestra presents ‘Eternal Classics’ Jan. 13

The Texarkana Symphony Orchestra will be true to this season’s theme of “Timeless” when presenting the program “Eternal Classics” on Jan. 13 at the Perot Theatre.

The 7:30 p.m. concert with a preview at 6:45 p.m. brings Mozart, J.C. Bach and Haydn to classical listeners here.

Marc-André Bougie says these three composers are from what is thought of as the quintessential classical era.

“The theme this year is timeless for the season, and timeless is a synonym for classic,” Bougie said.

Mozart is represented by the overture to the opera “Idomeneo,” as well as “Symphony No. 41,” also known as the “Jupiter” symphony. Haydn’s “Concerto for Trumpet” is on tap, in addition to “Sinfonia op.6, no. 6” from J.C. Bach, one of J.S. Bach’s sons.

“When people think of pure classical music, this is what this concert is going to be about,” said Bougie, noting a smaller orchestra of about 50 musicians is needed for this show. Clayton Harris will play the trumpet.

Bougie said this era produced refined music. Elegance and style are emphasized in this concert rather than loudness and power. The music is proportional, symmetrical and balanced, he said.

These three composers, said Bougie, had connections. Mozart met and played for Bach early in his life, and Bach realized Mozart was “one of a kind,” said Bougie.

“And on the other hand, Haydn and Mozart were buddies anyway,” he said.

About Mozart’s overture, Bougie said, “The overture is very lively, very gorgeous and very solemn,” noting its regal style. And the symphony, he added, was his “symphonic testament, if you will.”
