Sparks in the Park set for July 4 at fairgrounds

Fireworks, fun and fellowship are on the agenda for Texarkana’s celebrations of Independence Day, beginning with Celebrate America.

The annual event begins at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 3015 Moores Lane, with a pre-concert performance by the local jazz group, Josh Lawrence Trio.

At 8 p.m., the church’s choir and orchestra will present a concert of patriotic music complete with a presentation of the flags by the church’s Boy Scout Troop 16. Portions of the ceremony will include honoring the veterans, said Don Howren, minister of music.

The fireworks show is scheduled to begin about 9:15 p.m.

KOSY 790 AM will broadcast patriotic music in conjunction with the fireworks display.

“We hope everyone will come out and celebrate this free event in honor of America’s birthday,” Howren said.

Officials urge those planning to attend to bring their lawn chairs.

The celebration will continue on July 4 with the annual Sparks in the Park from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Four States Fairgrounds.

An action-packed afternoon is planned with several free indoor and outdoor events, such as rock climbing walls, inflatable bounce houses, a petting zoo, an ice cream eating contest, sack races, three-legged races, trolley train ride, face painting and a “Guitar Hero” contest.

Coordinator Andi Darby said there will be more concession vendors on hand this year than there were last year.

The bands will begin playing at 4 p.m., with the featured attraction starting at 7 p.m.

The fireworks display, slated for 9:15 p.m., will be accompanied by music from KYGL, Eagle 106.3.

Security and first aid stations will be on site to ensure a safe evening.

Admission and activities at both events are free.
