Entertainment from around the world is on tap for the upcoming 2009-2010 season at the Perot Theatre.

The Texarkana Regional Arts and Humanities Council has chosen selections to suit the most eclectic tastes in music, dance and theatrical spectaculars with an international flair.

Announced last week at the TRAHC members preview party, the season boasts Spanish dance, Japanese percussion, and Chinese artistry within its globetrotting lineup.

African, Brazilian, Balinese, Latin, and jazz rhythms kick off the season, Sept. 22, with the San Jose “Taiko Drummers.” This performance features the power and beauty of Japanese style percussion playing in choreographed, martial arts inspired movements.

Then, the sensual sophistication of “Ballet Hispanico” comes to town Oct. 29. Described as hot by some viewers, the international dance troupe fuses Latin dance with elegance and lyricism to create a passionate theatrical performance.

From Spain to China. On Nov. 23, TRAHC brings back to the Perot breathtaking acrobatics, this time with “Cirque Shanghai Bai Xi.” Physical strength, balance and grace, along with dance, martial arts and spectacular costumes hit the stage in a grand theatrical performance.

On Jan. 29, the a cappella harmonies of ten-time Grammy Award winning recording artists Take 6 will be on deck. Crossing musical genres from soul to gospel, R&B, pop, jazz and more, the Christian group is one of the most enduring in entertainment.

Moving from the sublime to the comedic, Feb. 16 brings Montana Rep’s “Leading Ladies.” Written by playwright Ken Ludwig, this comedy tells the story of two cross-dressing Englishmen bent on masquerading as long lost kin of a rich harridan who’s at death’s door. Reviews promise lots of laughs and a few clever surprises.

On Feb. 28 the Perot will rock out with “One Night of Queen.” Gary Mullen and The Works will play a rock n’ roll tribute show delivering renditions of iconic favorites: “We Will Rock You,” “We Are The Champions,” “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” They promise the look, sound and showmanship of the group in its glory days.

Finally, from across the pond, TRAHC brings a tribute to The Beatles on April 17. The show, “1964 The Tribute,” recreates an early ’60s Fab Four concert with period instruments, clothing, hair styles and onstage banter to introduce the band to a new generation and take some back to those days of yesteryear.

TRAHC’s theater for young audiences series boasts six shows for the young and young at heart: Theatreworks “Charlotte’s Web on Oct. 7, “Most Valuable Player: The Jackie Robinson Story” from Dallas Children’s Theatre on Oct. 26, “Peter and the Wolf,” from Childsplay of Tempe Ariz., on Nov. 16, Texarkana Symphony Orchestra on Jan. 22, “Nobody’s Perfect” presented by Kennedy Center for Young Audiences on Feb. 19, and “The Little Engine that Could” by the Omaha Theatre Co., on April 6.

“I think it’s going to be a great year. I think we’re attracting new people to the Perot Theatre, said TRAHC Executive Director Brian Goesl of the season line-up. “I encourage (all) to come, and to enjoy, and to share, and to give us the opportunity to take you and mystically and magically transform you and take you someplace else for an hour and a half or two hours. Because the Perot Theatre does that. When you walk through the doors you can be anyplace in the world.”

Full series tickets are currently on sale to TRAHC members now, mini-series tickets with be available to them on July 20 and single ticket sales on Aug. 17. Full series tickets for the general public go on sale Aug. 3 and ticket sales open to all on Aug. 31.
