TexRep brings timeless tunes to new venue
Texarkana Repertory Co. presents Broadway favorites in a new space on Monday, featuring personal selections cherished by TexRep performers.
It’s Chillin’ at the Icehouse to TexRep Tunes, explained Josh Morriss III, saying people who know TexRep know the theater troupe is ready to present some Broadway songs. “What we’ve done is we’ve assembled a group of outstanding voices to do songs that they would like to do. We like that formula ... these are songs that people have a particular affinity for, that they like. That’s the general idea,” said Morriss. Each performer will showcase two or three songs during their routine. They’ll perform at Hopkins Icehouse, a new and casual icehouse bar at Third and Wood streets downtown, as part of TexRep’s community division series of shows. Performance times are at 6:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and then again July 13 and 14 at the same time. The house opens at 5:30 p.m. so people can get comfortably settled before the performance. Morriss said in planning this show TexRep wanted the focus on fun, not art. And performing at Hopkins Icehouse encourages a new downtown business and shows involvement in the community, said Morriss, noting the community division seeks to make that kind of connection. “That’s kind of the spirit of going to the Icehouse this time,” he said. Last year, TexRep performed a song revue at The Percolator, another new downtown Texarkana business. Morriss says the space is a good fit for one of the songs. “One way that we’re trying to play to the space is that our opening number in its original iteration was set in a pub,” he said. TexRep performers for this production are those TexRep followers will recognize. “We’ve got some folks who are in this from even the early days of TexRep, including Ruth Ellen Whitt, Fred Norton, Ann Nicholas, yours truly, and some new faces,” said Morriss. They’re ready for a fine time spreading that Broadway pizzazz. “We’re going to have some fun, and we’re going to chill out at the Icehouse,” said Morriss. (Tickets: $10. Available at the door or at either the United Way office at 214 Spruce St. or Patterson’s Camera at 3415 Summerhill Road. Seating is limited.) |
