Ex-legislator named interim Arkansas higher education chief

LITTLE ROCK-A former state lawmaker has been picked as the interim director of the Arkansas Department of Higher Education.

Gov. Asa Hutchinson on Friday named Ann Clemmer to head the department when Brett Powell resigns July 29 to become vice president for finance and administration at Henderson State University. The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board is conducting a nationwide search to find Powell's permanent replacement.

Clemmer is a former state representative who has served as senior associate director for academic affairs at ADHE since 2015. She is a former faculty member at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and was a program director at Arkansas Northeastern College. She ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination for the U.S. House seat in Central Arkansas two years ago.
