Small temblors reported in western Kentucky, Arkansas

LA CENTER, Ky.-The U.S. Geological Survey reports a small earthquake in western Kentucky.

The USGS says a preliminary magnitude 3.5 quake was recorded at 2:12 a.m. Sunday about 9 miles north-northwest of La Center-and about 39 miles west-northwest of Paducah.

No reports of injuries or damage were immediately available.

Geologists say earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 to 3.0 are generally the smallest felt by humans and that damage is not likely from quakes of below magnitude 4.0.

La Center is about 61 miles to the northeast of New Madrid, Mo., for which the New Madrid Fault Line is named. The fault system was responsible for the catastrophic earthquakes in 1811-1812, according to USGS.

The zone includes seven states, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee and Mississippi.

The USGS site also lists a 2.5 quake occurring Monday at 1.24 miles north of Blytheville, Ark., which is in the New Madrid seismic zone.
