BEEBE, Ark.-A city in central Arkansas is opening a police substation at a public school campus in response to recent school shootings.
The Beebe Police Department will open the substation Friday, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported . The station will be on the Beebe School District's main campus, which includes a high school, primary school and district offices.
District Assistant Superintendent Rick Duff said he came up with the idea following recent school shootings, including the Florida school shooting that killed 17 and a Texas high school shooting where 10 people were killed.
"With all the unfortunate circumstances taking place across the nation, we were thinking about what we need to do to make our students safe," Duff said. "From there, they can supervise who's coming in and off campus but also be able to respond faster if something does come up."
Officers can complete paperwork and other duties at the station, which will create a stronger police presence on campus, said police Capt. Brian Duke.
"First and foremost, there will be a presence of officers," Duke said. "(Students) will see marked units on campus more often than they have in the past. With all the violence happening on campuses, I'm sure school officials are constantly worried about it-I know I am. I have kids there."
