Lawmaker pulls bill regarding outside donor groups

LITTLE ROCK-The lawmaker behind an effort to require outside groups involved in campaigns for Arkansas' top courts to disclose donors says he's looking at potential changes to his bill after facing questions about the impact of the proposal.

Republican Rep. Jimmy Gazaway on Wednesday pulled his proposal expanding the definition of independent expenditure groups that must file reports with the state after a half-hour of debate on the House floor. Gazaway's proposal would expand reporting requirements for groups involved in races for state Supreme and Appeals courts.

Gazaway's proposal is in response to recent state Supreme Court races that have been overshadowed by outside group spending. Conservative groups that distribute voter guides on candidates have questioned whether the expanded reporting requirements would apply to them.
