LONDON—The U.S. dollar was mostly higher against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday. Gold rose.

The euro traded at $1.4876, down from $1.4916 late Tuesday in New York. Later, in midday New York trading, the euro fetched $1.4881.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Tuesday, included 108.60 Japanese yen, down from 109.40; 1.0870 Swiss francs, down from 1.0880; and 1.0664 Canadian dollars, up from 1.0621.

The British pound was quoted at $1.8656, down from $1.8997.
