LONDON—The U.S. dollar was lower against other major currencies in European trading Thursday. Gold rose.

The euro traded at $1.4870, up from $1.4741 late Wednesday in New York. Later, in afternoon trading in New York Thursday, the euro fetched $1.4865.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Wednesday, included 108.47 Japanese yen, down from 109.79; 1.0870 Swiss francs, down from 1.0995; and 1.0453 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0626.

The British pound was quoted at $1.8747, up from $1.8615.
