LONDON—The U.S. dollar was higher against other major currencies in European trading Tuesday. Gold rose.

The euro traded at $1.4625, down from $1.4756 late Monday in New York. Later, in Tuesday afternoon trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.4626.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Monday, included 109.79 Japanese yen, up from 109.35; 1.1010 Swiss francs, up from 1.0963; 1.0484 Canadian dollars, up from 1.0479.

The British pound was quoted at $1.8367, down from $1.8525.
