NEW YORK—Gold prices advanced Friday as investors sought shelter during another volatile day on Wall Street. Energy prices rose, while agriculture futures fell.

Wall Street fluctuated in the early going Friday, with stocks moving in and out of positive territory. But the market staged a significant rally late in the day following an NBC News report that President-elect Barack Obama plans to name New York Federal Reserve President Timothy Geithner as Treasury secretary. The Dow Jones industrials rose 494 points to finish at the 8,046 level.
