The ongoing controversy about comments/sermons of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, presidential candidate Barack Obama’s spiritual advisor, speaks to more than Obama’s efforts to do damage control involving some of Wright’s more volatile comments on race relations or the tension inherent in the separation of church and state.

It also indicates a misunderstanding of the role and relationship between a person and his/her spiritual adviser, spiritual companion, spiritual guide, spiritual director or whatever one chooses to call their companions on the Way.
