At the dawn of my newspaper career, I was assigned to cover a 2-1/2-week teachers strike at a community college. The college board, in effect, broke the teachers union that year. But the running joke among the media was that the newspaper’s offer to mediate deadlocked negotiations provoked both sides to reach an agreement.

Relax, everyone on all sides of the Texarkana College presidential contract imbroglio. The Texarkana Gazette is not going into the mediation or arbitration business, as if such an effort would be accepted anyway.
