The day after Barack Obama was elected president, the Gazette newsroom was peppered with 10 to 15 telephone calls from people calling us bigots and racists. We were called such because, by these callers’ estimations, we had not given the new president his proper due.

Proper due, it seems, is measured by the size of the photo that runs with the story announcing Barack Obama as the new president.

The story and photo we ran were rather modest when compared to the space national and state newspapers were devoting. They had war-type headlines, ours wasn’t nearly as bold.
