One of the hardest illusions—perhaps delusions—about our nation to surrender is our idea that Americans are guided by some sort of supersentivity to fairness. That is, that when we see imbalance or unfairness, it raises our hackles and we do something to rectify unfairness as soon as possible.

Never have. And future prospects don’t look good for a commitment to equality to be achieved any time soon.
