Most of us don’t have a clue how much we drive or what kind of outlay is needed for us to drive on safe roads.

It’s probably better that way.

I started tracking my household’s driving miles back when gas was more than $4 a gallon. I also began calculating gas mileage on all our vehicles.

It was an eye-opener.

We drive about 335 miles a week, on average—and we don’t go anywhere. It is just shuffling kids around town, doing normal errands, going back and forth from school and work.
