U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who seems to have a lock on the Republican nomination for president, took a cue recently from another Republican who made it to the White House, former President George H.W. Bush.

Back when Bush accepted the GOP nomination for president, he famously vowed “Read my lips: No new taxes.”

We all know how that turned out—yes, new taxes. Bush tried to make voters understand that circumstances had changed.

Appearing on ABC’s “The Week” with George Stephanopoulos, McCain stepped into the same hole.
