Today is Good Friday.

Also called Holy Friday or Great Friday, in the Christian tradition, the day is set aside to commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

It always falls on the Friday before Easter. It isn’t a federal holiday, but it is a state holiday in some places—it’s an optional holiday in Texas—and so some city and county offices are closed.

It is common as well for schools to be out on Good Friday, though to minimize the religious aspects they usually refer to the break as some sort of a spring holiday.
