The death toll of American soldiers hit 4,000 on Easter Sunday, five years after the invasion that started the war.

The tragic milestone was reached when a roadside bomb in Baghdad claimed four service members.

The White House called it a “sober moment” and noted that President Bush reflects daily on the lives lost and the brave men and women still fighting in Iraq.
