Candidates promise to review government’s policy on releasing information

The Freedom of Information Act, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson on July 4, 1966, was designed to make the federal government more open to the citizens it serves.

It basically makes government records and information available to those who request such information in writing. There are exceptions to the FOIA, of course, mostly involving national security and ongoing criminal investigations.
