Texas university’s new honor code not so honorable

Many high schools, colleges and universities, public and private, have honor codes.

Such codes set the standards for what is considered honorable conduct within an academic community and let the students know exactly what is expected of them.

Some honor codes are simple. The U.S. Military Academy at West point’s code is one line—”A Cadet will not lie, cheat, or steal, nor tolerate those who do.”

Some are more elaborate and include rules on dress and grooming and prohibitions on all sorts of activities, from smoking and drinking to premarital sex and dating ...
