The former Soviet republic of Georgia made a big mistake last week when it sent troops into the breakaway region called South Ossetia.

The area had been under the protection of Russian troops for years. Moscow has backed the separatist movement there as part of larger plan to chip away at Georgia.

Russia responded with tanks, troops and bombers. Georgia’s foolish excursion into South Ossetia gave Moscow the excuse it has been waiting for to move against the former satellite—a pro-West democracy that sits upon vast oil reserves.
