Since the 1970s, the third Thursday in November—one week before Thanksgiving—has been set aside for “the Great American Smokeout.”

It’s a day when smokers are asked to give up tobacco for that day only, with the idea being that if they can quit for a single day, they can kick the habit for a lifetime.

It’s a great idea. We don’t need to go over the stats here. Everyone knows that smoking is a leading cause of cancer and heart disease. Everyone knows smoking kills.

And everyone knows that smoking sets a bad example for young family members and eats up dollar...
