It is a sad, senseless and shameful statistic for a nation that views itself as the epitome of all things necessary to the good life.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s annual survey of food security—Isn’t that a lovely way of referring to people who are going hungry?—showed more than 36 million adults and children—went hungry for some part of 2007. The figure is up by 700,000. Of the 36 million, more than 700,000 were children.

It does not take a math wizard to deduce that 2008—with its dismal economy—will end with even bigger numbers.
