Members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA, might not like the story. They might even regard it as animal abuse—albeit second hand and a bit late.

Nor will the tale gladden those whose hearts bleed for criminals—those poor, misunderstood little dears—who suffer injury in the pursuit of their ill-chosen profession.

But for most of us, this holiday story is just another reason to give thanks, both for good neighbors and for the noble bird that graces our tables the last Thursday of each November.
