It’s official—the voter turnout for this year’s presidential race was the highest in history in terms of number of votes cast and the highest n 40 years as a percentage of registered voters.

More than 131 million voted in this election. That’s the most ever recorded. It equaled 61.6 percent of the total number of Americans registered. America hasn’t seen that high a turnout since Richard Nixon defeated Hubert Humphrey in 1968.

Early voting also hit a new high. About 41 million Americans cast their vote early. That works out to about 31 percent of the total.
