Arkansas governor vows to keep campaign pledge

One of Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe’s pledges to the voters was that he would work to eliminate the state sales tax on groceries.

Last year, he convinced the Legislature to halve the tax, from 6 percent to 3 percent.

This year he hopes to cut the tax by another 1 percent.

When he made the campaign promise, Beebe gave himself an escape hatch, tying the promise to the state’s economic health.

And in a recent interview with The Associated Press, he said he could have used the current nationwide economic crisis to keep the tax as is and keep that revenue...
