Today marks the start of a new Congress, both House and Senate.

It happens every two years. And as in years past, the first order of business is the oath of office for new and re-elected representatives and senators.

The oath of office is the same in both chambers and is the same oath sworn by succeeding Congresses since 1884:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely...
