It was 48 years ago when Elwin Wilson and John Lewis met for the first time.
The year was 1961. The place was a bus station in a small South Carolina town called Rock Hill. Lewis, a black man, was one of two Freedom Riders who had come into town on a bus. Wilson, a white segregationist, was one of the crowd there to meet them. The meeting left Lewis and his fellow Freedom Rider, Albert Bigelow, bloody and bruised on the bus station parking lot.
